OLD BUSINESS:

Dick reported there are still polo Orlando GPAA shirts for sale at $15.00 each. There are sizes of S, M, and XL.  There is also a nametag waiting for “John”.

The holiday party was a HUGE success.  Lots of fun and good eating!  Thank you, again, Dave and Toni K. for hosting the 2015 party!

At the party, the 2016 officers were elected.

Your 2016 Orlando Chapter of GPAA, left to right: Dick C., Treasurer; Chris M., President; Eddie C, Vice President; Janice B.,Secretary

NEW BUSINESS:

We are tentatively planning a weekend in April for Lucky Strike.  Once a date is firmly established, O. C. of G.P.A.A. requests $100.00 deposit per participant for this weekend.  This year, there will be no refunds for cancellations due to accurate counts.  It was brought up that there are several cabins to rent at Thermal City down the road.  Chris asked for a new cook, and Steve has the stoves and grills.  Can you help??

Hopefully, we can do another fossil hunting trip to Peace River in March.

Again, we hope to metal detect at low tide sometime in February.  We can invite another chapter to go with us, and suggestions were made for New Smyrna Beach or Laurie Wilson park.

Deb asked about the LDMA and GPAA outings or staying at camps.  As a GPAA member, you can be a guest of an LDMA member once a year.

The next meeting will be February 13 AND IT WILL BE A POTLUCK!

The raffle for the gold concentrate bag was held and Pat, as you can see below, was one happy winner.

PotLuck February 13!

Respectfully submitted by Janice Bosscher.

February 2016 Meeting Minutes        Editor Janice Bosscher, Secretary of Orlando Chapter of G.P.A.A.

Chris welcomed everyone to the meeting and gust George from Tampa and wished everyone a Happy Valentine’s Day.

Dick reported that we still have gold pans and some shirts left to sell.

Outings discussions: For Fossil hunting, the Peace River in Wauchula, FL is still too high. I promised to publish information on obtaining the fossil hunting permit.

For metal detecting, the possibility of having an outing was discussed for May. Everyone is encouraged to take their detectors to any of our outings.

For the “Big Dig” it is scheduled for April 15-16 at Luck Strike Gold and Gem Mine on Vein Mountain in Marion, N. C. $100. Registration can be collected today or by our next meeting on March 12. We need at least 10 partipeople, whoops, participants to make it a go. There were already 10 confirmed with those present. We still need cooks for breakfast and dinner at the camp, and Steve has offered his grills for cooking.

It was mentioned that a lifetime GPAA membership is now $899.

Alabama Gold camp will be September 25- Oct 1. Loud Mine will also be in September.

Woody won the “Bag of gold concentrate” raffle.

Woody” the Bucket Man is “Bag Man” for the day

The Lucky Strike Trommel is waiting for us!

At the potluck, Toni K. made a wonderful hot dish. She said she got the recipe off from the package of Simply Potatoes South west Hash Browns. The original recipe is printed below, HOWEVER, Toni replaced the ground beef with Jimmy Deans hot sausage, omitted the mushrooms and tomatoes and added more cheese….It sure was good…and a quick one skillet meal!

March 2016 Meeting Minutes        Editor Janice Bosscher, Secretary of Orlando Chapter of G.P.A.A.

Chris welcomed everyone and made a special mention of seeing Art W. again…Art is one of the original members of our chapter. We also welcomed Justin G., Woody and Janice’s neighbor.

Treasurer report: Dick reported he was still collecting the registration fees for the April Outing.

Secretary’s report: I reported that I did not get out the February newsletter, and would combine the February and March newsletters

The Lucky Strike Outing is April 15-16. Chris will not be there until Friday evening, so Dave K., was is leaving Monday, will be our fearless leader for that time. We still need camp cooks for breakfast and dinner, and Steve has grills that can be used. We will ask Lucky Strike to schedule our “banquet” at 7pm instead of 6 pm. This will give everyone more time to clean up…the gold, gems, and ourselves. So far there are 13 prospectors ready to go. For camp crafting, Debby and Pat showed me the “How To” to make classifiers in Dollar Tree cups and I will teach wind streamers…details coming up. Do not forget to pack your metal detector!

Fossil Hunting: The Peace River is still quite high, and I promised to publish information on obtaining a fossil permit. PLEASE follow the link, print out the PDF, and file before we go fossil hunting. Florida Fossil Permit - Information concerning Florida's fossil permits can be found here

Please visit our WEB page. Bob G. has done a great job updating our page, including our “For Sale” section. While you are web surfing, also check out the GPAA web site. There is a lot of information available on both sites, and the GPAA even has thread discussions on different topics.

Gold Concentrate Raffle was won by____________. (Dunno, I cannot read my own chicken scratch!)

Happy Easter and Day Light Savings Time! Next meeting is April 9 (yes, four days before Lucky Strike!

As noted in the minutes, this year we are offering crafting at the campsite. Pat and Debby gave me the instructions for making classifiers from measuring cups. I will show you how to make wind streamers from plastic tablecloths. For those of you not attending the Lucky Strike outing, I will publish directions for both of these in the next newsletter. The following page is a shopping list and description of these crafts. I have already purchased disks of wire mesh in 40 x 40, 60 x 60, 80 x 80, 100 x 100, and 200 x 200. I might have some 20 x 20 by the time of the dig.

For the classifiers, please pick up from the Dollar Tree, the 2 cup + measuring cups for each classifier you want. I currentlly have 5 sizes, and these hook nicely on the side of a bucket. Also, please pick up some super glue. IF YOU HAVE IT, PLEASE BRING A DRILL WITH THE 2 ½ “ (DOOR KNOB) DRILL BIT. We also found a rough sandpaper to be handy for removing any jagged edges.

The wire mesh disks, super glue from Dollar Tree, E6000 from Walmart, measuring cups are from The Dollar Tree.

While you are at the Dollar Tree (or Walmart), pick up a plastic table cloth in a color/colors that you would like your wind sock in…for outside your tent, on your porch, or room. IF you have macramé ring or small embroidery hoops, great….but otherwise I should have enough to help make you make your first ones.

April/May 2016 Newsletter        Editor Janice Bosscher, Secretary of Orlando Chapter of G.P.A.A.

First, thank you to all of you who responded to the email request to update the email list. It took some concentration and some time, but now have about half the list it was.  For me, I will be able to send out one email to everyone as opposed to the two batches. Please let me know if someone has been accidentally taken off the list.  If you are not getting this newsletter, you are off the list!

April 9 Meeting recap: Chris handed us the agenda for the Lucky Strike Outing on April 15 and 16. He also welcomed Cathy M., who is not only going to Lucky Strike with us, but also joined our chapter and GPAA.  Steve M. will be cooking with/for us at Lucky Strike campground and we will have the buffet and gold spilt Saturday evening in the Clubhouse.  We were reminded that not everyone can be on first shift so please beware of overloading this time slot again.  Dick will not be there so Vice President Eddie C. will be the acting treasurer.  Chris will not be there until late Friday, so Dave K. will take his role until his arrival.  So far, it looks like there are 14 participants. Members were reminded that Thermal City, by Lucky Strike, also has cabin rentals.  Discussion was also held regarding new sites for October outing.

We are trying to find some more fossil sites in addition to Peace River in Wauchula.

Again, interest was brought up for a metal detecting outing.  Everyone was encouraged to take their detectors to Lucky Strike, also.

Dick reported on the treasury.  We have chosen to omit this report in this newsletter for internet security reasons, just like we usually to not display last names of our members.

Sympathies were expressed to President Chris in the passing of his mother.

The gold bag raffle was won by Linda and Henry won it last month.

Next meeting is May 14, 2016

Recent email from President Chris:

Hi Everyone, I received a call from a member in Chiefland, Fl. and his health is declining and would like to sell all his mining equipment.  He has a 4" dredge with a triple sluice that is only a few years old.  He has 2 sluices, one new and one used, pans, classifiers, 2 wet suits(not sure what size) weight belts and much more.  He is asking $2500.00 for all!  Not bad!  The dredge alone is worth a lot more than that!  He also would like to sell his LDMA Membership for $500.00.  He also requested that whoever is interested for them to call him to make an appointment to go see his stuff at his location since he is not able to load all his stuff up to meet someone who may or may not buy it.  He also would like to sell everything together.  Whoever is interested please call me or see me at the next meeting.  See you soon, Chris

May 14 Meeting notes:  Chris welcomed everyone and introduced Dick and Ann W.  They met up with us by a complete fluke at Lucky Strike, having been previous members.  Well, now they are back!

Chris announced that Cathy and Eddie C. have had the Noro virus and have been quite sick. An impromptu “card” was passed around for members to send healing thoughts.

The treasury report was given by Dick.

The officers encouraged an Email clean up.  Right now, Orlando GPAA chapter email recipients have to be divided into two lists for our mailings.

There is a group planning to go to the Weekenders in Georgia on Memorial Day weekend.

Please remember to check our Web page for members selling equipment…and to keep posted on outings and news.

There is a Sunday morning “Prospectors” radio show, where many items are given away, if you can get through.

Okay, this is your chance to become famous:  Chris announced that he received a call from the casting director of “Bering Sea Gold”.  Are you up for it?  Let Chris know if you want to try out…

Lucky Strike Recap: 14 were very active, and 17 in attendance.  Eddie C. did a fantastic job with the treasurer duties and Dave K. with the leadership on Friday.  Thursday night we drew numbers at the campsite, and numbers 1-7 were 1st shift on Friday, 2nd shift on Saturday, and the numbers 8-14 were 2nd shift on Friday and 1st on Saturday.  If people drew a number different from their partner, it was easily switched around.  This method worked really well.  Exhausting fun, good weather, food (Oh, can Steve M. grill and cook!).  Toni K. was chief bottle washer!  Thanks, Steve and Toni!  Very few pretty rocks were found, and we will do something with those that were at a later date.

Our “new” Ann W. won the raffle and after we had our potluck.  Next meeting in June 11.

We were so busy at the April dig, we did not get around to making the Dollar Tree classifiers. While I had the disks with me, it is probably just as well that we did not make these. Both Debbie C. and I found out that the 2 ½ inch door hole bit was too large. We need a 2 ¼ inch drill bit. Meanwhile, after last newsletter, Mike W. kindly sent this email to me:

On your 'make your own classifier projects, I suggest you add masking tape and sharpen your drill bits a bit more to include a'mo-betta' point on the tip of the bit.

MOST DRILL BITS ARE SHARPENED @ A 58 DEGREE ANGLE, TIP TO RELIEF.

FOR PLASTIC, GLASS and TILE THE BIT NEEDS TO BE LITTLE BIT SHARPER, POINTED. SIMILAR TO A SPEAR POINT.

BEFORE YOU DRILL THROUGH THE BOTTOM OF THE PLASTIC CONTAINERS PLACE MASKING TAPE ON BOTH SIDES OF THE INTENDED HOLE AREA. THE TAPE HELPS THE SHARPER BIT TO NOT SHATTER OR CHIP AND GIVES YOU A CLEANER CUT.

HOPE THIS HELPS, HAVE FUN WITH THE PROJECTS.

I will have a set of five screens that I ordered for the Lucky Strike available for $5.00. They are #304 Steel mesh in 40 x 40, 60 x 60, 80 x 80, 100 x 100, and 200 x 200. These are the pre-cut classifier screens

If you need any assistance on making these, please contact Debbie C. or myself. I will get back to you around the 15th.

June 2016 Highlights        Editor Janice Bosscher, Secretary of Orlando Chapter of G.P.A.A.

Eddie C. was welcomed back after his illness.

15 of our club members went to the Weekender’s event near Cleveland, GA on Memorial Day weekend. This was not a GPAA sponsored event, and everyone had a good time.

Bob G. is in touch with a Central Florida Metal detecting Club regarding an outing. He also went to a meeting where they talked about personal protection such as pepper spray, Walkie-talkies, etc.

Moses Solomon was introduced as the guest speaker. Moses is a former missionary in the Philippines and presented packets and talked about the gold locked into cement in the Philippines. He is looking for sponsors to exhume this gold with special equipment.

Many members are looking to sell some of their equipment. Sam from Chiefland has dredges, sluices and wet suits and Marty has a dredge, Hookah and wet suits also for sale. Be sure to check our web site for details. Bob G does a fantastic job on updating the web site.

The raffle was won by Steve.

July 2016 Highlights        Editor Janice Bosscher, Secretary of Orlando Chapter of G.P.A.A.

Eddie Carter led the meeting in absence of Chris.

Bob G. was thanked for updating our Web site.

There was discussion on Lucky Strike versus Alabama Gold Camp, and at this point, Lucky Strike is our better option.

There was mention of fossil hunting in phosphorus mines in Polk County or at Venice Beach this late fall or winter.

Steve M, our fabulous Chef at Lucky Strike in April is missing his scales…if you would check your camping equipment.

The raffles were won by Gary and Rick.

August 2016 Highlights        Editor Janice Bosscher, Secretary of Orlando Chapter of G.P.A.A.

Mark and Emma from Tampa, as well as Ed and Dottie (guests of Ann and Les) were welcomed.

Because the summer months have been, and always are slow, we will have a summer issue of our newsletter.

After sine discussion of when and where, we will try to secure the weekend of October 15 at either Lucky Strike or Alabama Gold Camp. There is a Gold Show in Nashville, TN on October 8 & 9

Woody won the raffle.

September 2016 Newsletter        Editor Janice Bosscher, Secretary of Orlando Chapter of G.P.A.A.

The September 10 meeting was again at Warren Park in Orlando and President Chris Maggio called the meeting to order at 10 a.m. Steve K,, a former guest is now a member as well as Luci and Ron S., new guests today. We were also visited by Yani L. and Gergana H. Welcome, everyone!

Treasury report given by Dick C. has the numbers at $1240 last month and now, due to last months raffle and member kit sale it is at $1410.

OLD BUSINESS:

Due to a lot of rain, fossil hunting at the Peace River? Well, it is flooded! Information concerning Florida's fossil permits can be found here. Remember, these are good for a year.

NEW BUSINESS:

Dave and Toni K. have again offered their place for our Christmas party….reserve our regular meeting date, the second Saturday of the month (December 10). It is at 11 am, potluck and white elephant gift exchange with lots of fun.

So, after much anticipation, the October “dig” will actually be two weekends. Yes, you actually have your choice of two, or even both. Both weekend “digs” will be at Lucky Strike Gold and Gem Mine in Marion, N.C. The first weekend will be October 7 & 8, and the second will be October 14 & 15 (with the Vein Mountain GPAA chapter there at the same time. Many of our members planned on going to the Gold Show in Nashville on October 8 & 9, or had to work on vacation days for our outing. SO, in order to pull this off, we selected both weekends.

WHAT YOU NEED TO DO:

Contact our president Chris M. if you are attending. Currently we are asking $60 per person per “dig”. We NEED A FIRM COMMITMENT for you desired weekend (S) for food count, camping space count and equipment/dirt orders. If you find it easier, respond to me and I will forward this to Chris. Please decide which weekend(s) ASAP and let us know so we can secure enough camping spaces and food. Please let us know if you can bring a sluice (with feet) or any other equipment. We will not be renting the wash plant, but will rent some smaller equipment. So far, Deb and Dave are bringing their gold cubes and Dave and Les their trommels. In addition, we need grip clamps (4” to 6”). We will not be dividing and weighing the grams of our common dig, but each participant will receive a bag of the final concentrates.

Packing your gold gear should include clothes for cooler weather (HA! With our Florida summer, anything would be cooler!) You can pay your fee when you get there. BUT please make a firm commitment…”back-outs” could create havoc with our finances. Steve will again be our breakfast and dinner Chef. We are asking you to pack grill able food or purchase it in town. For the first weekend, and possibly the second, we will not have the “banquet” and instead have grilled steak. We encourage you to patronize the Lucky Strike Grill at lunch time. Do not forget your dollars…for your fee, “Food Money” jar, lunch and maybe some “dirt.”

We will still have our normal October meeting October 8 at Warren Park. Members attending the dig or the meeting will receive a double point for our Christmas points. Our last three meetings of the year will be October 8 and November 12 at Warren Park and December 10 at Dave and Toni’s. I made mention that for those in Central Florida that first weekend, there is a Gem and Mineral Show at the Fern Creek Armory. I will bring maps to the October meeting as to how to get there from Warren Park.

The meeting was adjourned at 10:40 with new member Steve winning the raffle.

These are examples of the grip clamps we need for gold processing.

WANTED: Pictures of the October digs and gold show….Thanks!

October 2016 Newsletter        Editor Janice Bosscher, Secretary of Orlando Chapter of G.P.A.A.

Wow!  What a month!  While hurricane Matthew canceled our usual monthly meeting, 11 Chapter members were able to attend the first “dig” at Lucky Strike the weekend of October 7 & 8.  Ron and Luci sent me pictures to remind themselves (and others) what process they followed, and Deb C. also sent some pictures.  The group did not have the property banquet, but went to eat at The Boxcar.

The work site.

Dirt delivered to the two trommels.

A Trommel.

Hose hookups for water flow at the work site.

The concentrates put through the gold tube.

Ron S. and Ann W.

There it is! The gold weight for the first weekend was 1.9 grams.

Just before we left for Lucky Strike for the second weekend, I received a phone call from Eddie C. and he had a heart attack that Tuesday.  During the first weekend Ron S. ran into a few health problems and had a visit to McDowell Hospital in Marion.  A week later, we brought Woody into the same E.R. (Woody met up with some Bell’s Palsy) and they recognized the group activity, camp and name from Ron’s visit!  As of this typing, all men are recovering as best they can.  Praying for complete healing, Ron, Eddie and Woody!

The second weekend saw 12 members at Lucky Strike.   The process of the first week was repeated.  Our banquet featured best chicken dinner ever prepared by Toni, Ann, and Anne.

Everyone received .3 grams of gold after the cleanup.

One thing that was learned from earlier in the week? …check the gravel. Dave had spotted a picker right in the gravel!

Anne W. and Toni K…our fantastic clean up crew, and cooking crew along with

Reminder of our Christmas Party at Kinney's on December 10.  It is a potluck, good times, white elephant gift game, good times and more good times.  Please start thinking about your “white elephant”, keeping it in the $10 to $15 range.  We have seen everything from vodka to toilet banks to classifiers to shovels to candy.  Preferably, but not necessary, hav your gift related to prospecting and wrapped.  If it is gender specific, please label it as so.

The gang of the second weekend by the forever campfire.

Our next meeting is Saturday, 10 am at Warren Park on November 12.  While we have been having our potlucks every quarter (as opposed to the last few years at every other month), this falls on the November meeting.  Because we have our BIG potluck at our Christmas party, let’s have a Veterans Coffee at this meeting.  Coffee, sweet and unsweet iced tea, Coke, Diet Coke, and water will be brought in by the board.  Please bring “coffee” type items such as donuts, boiled eggs, fruit, breads and pastries.

At this meeting, I would like to start checking your GPAA membership cards so that it is not sooo zoo-ey at our Christmas party.  I will also have a sign-up sheet for your offerings at the Christmas party.

Hopefully, we will see everyone in about two weeks!

November 2016 Newsletter        Editor Janice Bosscher, Secretary of Orlando Chapter of G.P.A.A.

The November meeting was held November 12. 2016 at Warren Park.  We celebrated our Veterans with a coffee and a show of hands of those who are veterans… well over half of the attendees.  Chris then reported on 3 members who have had visits to the hospital.  Ron S. And Woody both visited McDowell County hospital at each of the Lucky Strike Weekends.  Both Ron and Woody are recovering, as is Eddie C., who had a heart attack between those two weekends.  All three gentlemen were in attendance today.

Chris reminded everyone that there was a sign-up sheet for the Christmas party on the table.

I asked to start checking GPAA ID’s today so it would not be quite so zoo-ey for the party.  I thanked everyone for their pictures and input for the October newsletter, and for their support.

LUCKY STRIKE OUTING DISCUSSION:  The officers had a meeting prior to this one and the consensus was that never again will we have two separate weekends.  For many reasons, this just does not work.  We look forward to learning from our mistakes, and one being that we must schedule our outings further in advance.  The first weekend brought in 1.9 grams of gold from 8 loads of dirt and a broken down Trommel.  The second weekend saw 4.1 grams and 14 loads of dirt.  Ann W. and Toni K. were the fantastic cooks as well as gold clean up.

The By-laws were discussed and the members were reminded that if they desire a copy to let me, Janice Bosscher, know, and I will be happy to email them to you.  Many of the chapters out west even have “CLAIM officers” and equipment officers.  While many of those officer positions do not apply to us, and given that we have to have better scheduling, we could use an outings Officer and committee.  Chris asked those who were willing to serve on an outings committee to please let me know after the meeting.  (Those interested are:  Les and Ann P., Steve M., Debbie C. and Mark T.)  Members even suggested that we have possible dates and places presented at the January meeting so vacations and travel plans can be arranged.  With the by-laws, we were reminded that anyone can be nominated to our chapter office at the next meeting.  (However, no surprises to the nominee.)

Marty H. found a 300 year old Spanish coin on the beach after the hurricane… and Bob displayed his metal detecting beach finds.  Ann W. had copies to make a sluice from the square PVC gutter pipes and rubber corduroy.  (If you would like one, ask Ann or me and I will send you one via email.

Mark T won the raffle!  (When I got home from the meeting I had a message from Bill Niazy, he sends his greetings, gratitude for our friendship and that he has now moved back to Michigan.)

And of course the big discussion was about our next meeting, December 10, our Christmas party!  Dave and Toni K. have again graciously offered to host the party at their house.  I will send out directions to their place in a separate email.  WHAT TO BRING?

1. Whatever dish you signed up for.  If you did not sign up, please let me know and I will put you on the list.
2. Something for the gift exchange, per person.  In the past, we have seen liquor sets, prospecting tools, candy, funny stools, lottery scratch offs, blenders, crazy white elephants, etc. Please wrap your gift, keep around $15.00, and if it is gender specific, please label it as so.  (Not that the gift is male or female, but that it is meant for a male or female.)
3. Your appetite… we all make some pretty good food.
4. A lawn chair…there is a large open shelter at Kinney’s, but please bring your lawn chair!
5. Your sense of humor, let us celebrate our chapter!
